About Newbold
For Newbold Bohemia, taking a photo is just one small step in a larger process of creating artwork. Photography is a way to collect material that is combined with other images to realize his vision of the final artwork. Photos can also act as sketches, or even canvasses to create his final images. “Photos are just a material like paint, wood, or clay,” says Newbold. “I plan and create photos in my studio or in the field — often building sets, creating props and using models. I then color them, paint them, cut them, and combine them — either physically or digitally — to create something new.”
Newbold Bohemia led a very creative childhood amid the cornfields of Indiana. “My mother created craft displays for a store, so we always had tons of art supplies beyond crayons and finger paints.” recalls Newbold. “I had wood, metal, plaster, fabric, beads, art papers, spray paints — our house was like a mini craft store, it was magical.”
Newbold earned a BA degree in Psychology from Purdue in 1988. He worked in a variety of careers, including designing programs for developmentally disabled kids and making things in various factories. In 2000 he returned to college and became a graphic and web designer, working with clients like Toshiba, 5/3 Bank and the Girl Scouts.
In 2011 Newbold decided to pursue a full-time career as an artist. “Now I create not only art, but entire new worlds within my photos,” explains Newbold, “worlds that are fictional but hopefully truthful.”
Newbold Bohemia is actually a chosen name, not a birthright. The name reminds Newbold to create art dedicated to the four pillars of Bohemian society — Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love.
